Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Education Conference: Transition and Retention across the Student Lifecycle

The University of East Anglia, in partnership with Education Solutions Norfolk, would like to invite all interested parties to an innovative conference on Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) education across the student lifecycle from Early Years to Higher Education. The conference will revolve around the two strands of how we support young people from GRT communities to transition to the next stages in their education and how we ensure that we retain these young people in education. Examples of best practice will be discussed on the day to showcase innovation in the education sector, and the key challenges in retaining and transitioning young people from GRT communities will be deliberated with the help of experts.

We are delighted to announce that the two key note speakers for conference are Dr Kate D’Arcy, senior research fellow at the University of Bedfordshire, and Ms Lisa Smith, a freelance Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller education consultant. We will also be joined by a representative of OFSTED, Ms Chris Snudden, Assistant Director of Children’s Services in Norfolk, Mr Dick Palmer, CEO of Norwich Ten Group, advocates for the GRT community, and schools from across Norfolk which have implemented best practice for their GRT students. There will be an exhibition of various information stands throughout the day and the conference will conclude with live singing performed by Thomas McCarthy. Our hope is that this conference will create an inclusive and positive atmosphere to examine how GRT education can be improved in a collaborative and support manner.

The conference is free to attend but must be pre-booked. It is possible to apply for travel reimbursement, please contact us to find out if you are eligible.
