Imogen Bright Moon is a British-Romani craftswoman, studio weaver and exhibiting artist-maker in textiles. She combines hand-weaving with storytelling, folklore and heritage crafts to create her studio textiles. Bright Moon works with hand-spun yarns on simple wooden looms to explore the ongoing story of textiles and their place in our lives today. Her work intersects the areas of therapeutic arts, maternal mental health and storytelling, to explore and give voice to hidden identities in the context of domestic folk crafts and ancestral cultural lineages.
The curated textile artworks that form the body of Imogen’s installation culminate in the larger work of Black Tent / Black Sarah. The main structure sculpts an arc, a soft black rainbow, suggesting the traditional alignment of the ancient bender tent, whilst the integrated steel adds another dimension of form and gravitational independence not usually the domain of textile arts. It is this space that has really driven and guided the work, the honouring of the handcraft and domestic textures inherent in textile work, combined with the capacity to protect, shield, hide and conceal. The large sculptural form of Black Tent / Black Sarah takes up space—it occupies.
